Contributed Rs. 96 Crores for philanthropic causes across Science, Research & Education, Social & Environment, and Art & Culture segments
Bengaluru, 9 November 2023: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Executive Chairperson, Biocon Ltd. and Biocon Biologics Ltd. has been recognized as the Second most generous women philanthropist, in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List. Her remarkable philanthropic contribution of Rs. 96 Crores have benefited the Science, Research & Education, Social & Environment, and Art & Culture segments, in FY2023 (over 26 lakh per day). She has been named as the top philanthropist to have contributed between the range of 50 to 100 crores.
This is the tenth year of the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List. It features individuals who have donated Rs. 5 crore or more during the period April 2023 – March 2023, which positions Kiran among the Top 15 philanthropists in India. The distinguished EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023 that compiles top 119 Philanthropists (25 new entrants) highlights the efforts of 7 Women Philanthropists. The philanthropists have cumulatively donated Rs. 8,445 Crores which has increased by 59% compared FY2022.
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said, “Philanthropy is about setting an example and I think many of us, first-generation entrepreneurs who have built very successful businesses have come together to take a common approach to philanthropy. We all believe that every generation has to create new wealth and the wealth that you have created, a large part of it must go back into making the society better. It is this belief that has led me to focus my philanthropic efforts on Science, Research & Education; Social & Environment; and Art & Culture, with a zeal to change the world for the better.”
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has been actively contributing towards the welfare of several causes across Art & Culture, Science, Research & Education, and Social & Environment. She believes it is one of the factors that can Advance Humanity. Her contributions support scientific research, with a special focus on the biosciences, encourages the conservation and advancement of art and culture, and also backs institutions and initiatives actively working in areas related to the environment, sustainability, health, nutrition, diversity and inclusion. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is the first Indian woman to join The Giving Pledge – a global initiative in 2015. She was the second Indian to join after Azim Premji. Since then, notable philanthropists from India have joined The Giving Pledge founded by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates that encourages billionaires to give the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes.
